How do I set up voicemail so callers hear a greeting?

Set up visual or carrier voicemail on a cell phone in Phone settings, or program the voicemail access number on a cordless phone under MENU > Settings or Voicemail Setup. If the cordless menu has no voicemail number, the greeting is usually managed by the phone company instead.
Follow these steps
Identify where voicemail lives
On a smartphone, open the Phone app and look for Voicemail or Visual Voicemail. On a cordless phone, press MENU and look for Settings, Voicemail Setup, or Voicemail Number.
You should see: You find either an in-app greeting recorder or a voicemail number field.
Record or enable the greeting
On a cell phone, follow Voicemail > Greeting to record a custom message. On a cordless phone, enter the carrier voicemail access number if the menu asks for it, then dial that mailbox to record the greeting.
You should see: A greeting is saved, or you reach the carrier mailbox prompts.
Test with a real call
From another phone, call your number, let it go to voicemail, and listen for your greeting. Change rings-before-answer only after the greeting works.
You should see: Callers hear your message instead of a generic prompt or failed transfer.
If the cordless menu has no voicemail number
Contact the phone company that provides the landline or VoIP service and ask them to enable voicemail and set the greeting. The handset alone may not host the mailbox.
