Why is my voicemail not working?

Answer

First identify which part fails: ringing, greeting, leaving a message, or playing saved messages. Then check whether you use carrier dial-in voicemail or Visual Voicemail in the Phone app—availability depends on the carrier and region—and confirm the mailbox is not full and the password is correct.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never share your voicemail password or one-time codes with unexpected callers or texts claiming to fix your mailbox.
  • Turning off Visual Voicemail can delete recordings stored in the Phone app even if the carrier still has copies.

Follow these steps

  1. Test from another phone

Call your number from a different phone. Note whether it rings, reaches a greeting, and accepts a short test message. Then try listening to that message on your phone.

You should see: You know whether the failure is leaving messages, retrieving them, or both.

  2. Check Visual Voicemail versus carrier mailbox

On iPhone, open Phone and look for the Voicemail tab. On Android, open the Phone app and check for a Voicemail section. If Visual Voicemail is missing, dial your carrier’s voicemail access number (often your own number with a long hold, or a number listed in the carrier account).

You should see: You reach either Visual Voicemail or the carrier dial-in mailbox.

  3. Clear space and reset the greeting if needed

Delete old messages if the mailbox reports full. Use the Phone app or carrier menu to confirm the greeting is set. Change the voicemail password only through the official Phone settings or carrier account path—not a link from a text or caller.

You should see: New messages can be left, and you can open them without a password error.

  4. Resolve app conflicts on Android

If you installed a carrier voicemail app, know that it can turn off Visual Voicemail in Phone by Google. Prefer one voicemail method. Avoid turning off Visual Voicemail until you understand recordings may be removed from the Phone app even if the carrier still keeps a copy.

You should see: One clear voicemail path works without conflicting apps.

  5. Contact the carrier if service features are missing

If Visual Voicemail, Live Voicemail, or basic mailbox access still fails after a restart and a successful cellular connection, contact your carrier through its official app or account site to confirm the feature is provisioned for your plan and region.

You should see: The carrier enables or repairs voicemail service, or confirms it is unavailable on your plan.

Extra tips

What to look for: No greeting, mailbox full, incorrect password, Visual Voicemail unavailable, missing Voicemail tab, or callers who hear ringing but cannot leave a message

Before you change anything: Note whether you use Visual Voicemail in the Phone app or dial a carrier number. Do not share your voicemail password or one-time codes with unexpected callers. Avoid turning features off until you know whether recordings are stored on the phone or only with the carrier. Have another phone ready to place a short test call.
