How do I sign in to a Google account when it asks for a new phone number?

Google is usually trying to add or verify a recovery phone. If you cannot use a phone number, choose "Try with email" (or another listed recovery method) on the official Google page and complete verification with an email you already control.

Follow these steps
Stay on the official Google page
Open a browser and go to accounts.google.com yourself. Avoid links from unexpected emails or texts that ask you to "update your phone number."
You should see: You see Google’s real sign-in or account page with the google.com address in the bar.
Choose email instead of a new phone number
If the screen asks for a phone number, look for "Try with email," "Try another way," or "Skip" and select the method that uses an email you can open.
You should see: Google sends a code or link to your email, or shows another recovery challenge you recognize.
Complete the email verification
Open the recovery email, enter the code or follow the link, then finish signing in. Do not forward the code to anyone else.
You should see: You reach your Google Account or the next security screen successfully.
Update phone and recovery options after sign-in
Once signed in, go to Google Account > Security > Ways we can verify it’s you, and add a phone number you control or confirm the recovery email is current.
You should see: Your account shows an up-to-date phone or email recovery method you can use next time.
If no recovery method works
Use Google’s Account Recovery form from the official "Forgot email" / "Try another way" flow and answer account history questions as accurately as you can. Recovery can take time.
You should see: Google either restores access or explains that more information is needed.
