How do I update the cell phone number on my online accounts?
Answer
Update the mobile number in each account’s official security or profile settings, starting with email and phone-carrier accounts, then confirm the new number with the verification text those sites send.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Turning off the old number before updating banks or email can lock you out of two-factor prompts.
Follow these steps
Update the primary email or Apple/Google account first
Sign into the main Google, Apple ID, or email account and open Security or Sign-in & Security settings. Change the recovery or 2-step phone number to the new cell number and confirm the SMS code.
You should see: The primary account lists the new number as verified.
Update banking and payment accounts
Sign into each bank, credit card, and payment app through official channels and replace the mobile number used for alerts or two-factor authentication.
You should see: Those accounts send a successful test code or confirmation to the new phone.
Update shopping, social, and carrier accounts
Repeat the phone-number change on remaining important sites, plus the wireless carrier account profile itself if it still shows the old number for account contact.
You should see: Critical accounts no longer rely only on the old number.
Remove the old number after a short overlap
Once the new number works everywhere that matters, remove or replace the old number on those accounts so recovery texts stop going to the previous phone.
You should see: Account recovery and alerts arrive on the new cell number only.

Extra tips
What to look for: Account screens labeled mobile number, recovery phone, 2-step verification, or trusted phone number
Before you change anything: Have the new phone able to receive SMS. Keep the old number active until major accounts are updated. Use only official account websites or apps. Never share one-time codes with unexpected callers.
