How do I fix an iPhone call that keeps cutting out?

Answer

Call dropouts that follow a phone upgrade are often network or Wi-Fi Calling issues rather than a bad handset. Toggle Airplane Mode, test with Wi-Fi Calling off, check the microphone, then reset network settings if calls still cut out.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Reset Network Settings removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN configurations.
  • Do not share one-time carrier codes with anyone who contacts you about the call drops.

Follow these steps

  1. Refresh cellular registration

Turn Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds, turn it off, then place a test call on cellular.

You should see: The call stays connected with two-way audio, or the dropout pattern becomes clearer.

  2. Test Wi-Fi Calling on and off

Go to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling, turn it off for one test call, then back on for another, comparing stability.

You should see: You learn whether Wi-Fi Calling is contributing to the cutouts.

  3. Check the microphone path

Open Voice Memos or a camera video and record while speaking normally and covering the bottom mic briefly. Also try a call with the speakerphone on.

You should see: You confirm whether the mic hardware works, helping separate network drops from one-way audio hardware issues.

  4. Reset network settings

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings, rejoin Wi-Fi, then retest calls.

You should see: Call stability improves after network configuration is rebuilt.

  5. Ask the carrier to refresh the line

If dropouts continue on Wi-Fi chat or another phone, ask the carrier to refresh provisioning for the transferred number on the new iPhone.

You should see: Carrier-side refresh stops the recurring cutouts.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether dropouts happen on Wi-Fi and cellular, mic test results, Wi-Fi Calling status, and signal changes during calls.

Before you change anything: Note whether the other person loses audio, you lose audio, or the call drops entirely. Have the Wi-Fi password ready before Reset Network Settings. Avoid restoring from backup repeatedly until basic call tests finish. Never share carrier codes with unexpected callers.
