How do I fix an iPhone that cannot make or receive calls?

When an iPhone cannot make or receive calls, restart the phone, refresh cellular with Airplane Mode, then confirm the line is on in Cellular settings. Waiting for Activation usually means the carrier plan has not finished provisioning.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not share carrier verification codes with unexpected callers while troubleshooting service.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the iPhone

    Power the iPhone fully off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on and wait for cellular registration.

    You should see: Signal returns and a test call can be placed or received.

  2. Refresh cellular with Airplane Mode

    Open Control Center, turn Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds, then turn it off.

    You should see: The carrier name reappears and calling is restored, or the status changes to a clearer error.

  3. Confirm the cellular line is enabled

    Go to Settings > Cellular and make sure the line is turned on. If you use Dual SIM, set the correct default voice line.

    You should see: The intended line is active for calls.

  4. Check call-blocking settings

    Open Settings > Phone and turn off Silence Unknown Callers temporarily. Also check Focus and Do Not Disturb so incoming calls are not silenced.

    You should see: Incoming calls from unknown or bank numbers can ring again.

  5. Contact the carrier if activation is stuck

    If Waiting for Activation remains, contact the carrier over Wi-Fi or another phone and ask them to refresh or finish provisioning the line.

    You should see: Activation completes and normal calling works.
