How do I unlock an Android phone after forgetting the pattern lock?

Answer

Modern Android phones rarely offer the old Forgot pattern unlock. Use Google Find My Device if the phone is online, or perform a factory reset from recovery mode, then sign in with the previous Google account.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory reset deletes photos, apps, and files stored only on the phone.
  • Do not share Google verification codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Follow these steps

  1. Try Find My Device

From another device, open Google Find My Device, select the locked phone, and use Secure device or Erase if you intend to wipe it.

You should see: The phone receives a remote lock message or begins erasing.

  2. Boot into recovery mode

Power off the phone, then use the model’s key combo to open recovery mode. On many phones this involves Volume Down + Power, then selecting Recovery mode.

You should see: The Android recovery menu appears.

  3. Factory reset from recovery

Select Factory data reset or Wipe data/factory reset, confirm, then reboot the system.

You should see: The phone restarts to initial setup without the old pattern.

  4. Complete Factory Reset Protection

Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with the Google account that was previously on the phone, then set a new screen lock.

You should see: Setup finishes and the phone is usable again.

Extra tips

What to look for: Find My Device visibility, recovery-mode menus, and Factory Reset Protection Google sign-in after wipe.

Before you change anything: Confirm the Google account email and password used on the phone. Accept that a factory reset erases local data. Avoid endless pattern guesses that trigger long lockouts. Never share Google codes with unexpected callers.
