What should I do if a new iPhone has the wrong passcode or Apple ID?

Answer

If Settings shows someone else’s Apple ID and you cannot sign out, erase the iPhone with Erase All Content and Settings, then set it up with your own Apple ID. If Activation Lock demands the other Apple ID, only that owner or Apple with proof of purchase can unlock it.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erasing deletes apps and data on the iPhone.
  • Paid “iCloud unlock” services from strangers are commonly scams and can be illegal to use on devices you do not own.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the Apple ID on the device

If you can open Settings, tap the name at the top and note the email shown. See whether Sign Out appears at the bottom of that screen.

You should see: You confirm whether a foreign Apple ID is signed in and whether Sign Out is available.

  2. Erase the iPhone if you own it

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings and complete the erase.

You should see: The phone returns to the Hello setup screen.

  3. Set up with your Apple ID

During setup, create or sign in with your own Apple ID and set a new passcode you control.

You should see: Setup finishes on your account without asking for someone else’s credentials.

  4. Handle Activation Lock if it appears

If the phone asks for the previous owner’s Apple ID after erase, stop guessing. Contact the seller or Apple Support with proof of purchase.

You should see: You either get the owner to remove the device or Apple advises on next steps.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether Settings shows Sign Out under the Apple ID, or Activation Lock after erase asking for another email.

Before you change anything: Back up anything you need from the phone if you can open it. Have proof of purchase ready. Never give passwords to unexpected callers offering unlock services.
