How do I recover a hacked X account when I cannot sign in?
Answer
Use X’s Forgot password flow with the original account username. Recover through the email address or phone number already associated with that account. If that fails, use the support-request route in X’s compromised-account guide; a newly created account does not restore the old one.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Never pay a stranger who promises to recover the account or give them your password or verification codes.
Follow these steps
Identify the original account
Use the username of the account you want to recover, rather than an unrelated new email or account. Check old messages or the original profile if you need to confirm the spelling.
You should see: You have the correct account identifier.
Request an official password reset
Follow X’s password recovery instructions. Select Forgot password from sign-in, enter the original username, and use a recovery destination you control. Enter any received code only on X’s recovery page.
You should see: You can set a new password or identify why verification cannot complete.
Escalate failed recovery through X
If resetting fails, open X’s compromised-account guide and follow its Support Request link. Include the original username and last date you had access, using the account-associated email when available.
You should see: The official request contains the account and ownership context, without a promise of recovery.
Secure access after recovery
Choose a strong password you have not used elsewhere. Secure the linked email account and review connected applications, revoking access for unfamiliar ones as X’s compromised-account guide recommends.
You should see: Access is restored if verification succeeds, and unfamiliar app access is removed.

Extra tips
What to look for: The original username, masked recovery destination, and emails about account changes.
Before you change anything: Identify the original profile and confirm access to its linked email or phone. Do not share recovery codes with anyone offering private account-recovery services.
