How do I undo an accidental iPhone software update?

Answer

You usually cannot stop or roll back an iOS update once it has finished installing. Check Settings > General > About for the current iOS version, then adjust Display and keyboard settings—or restore from an iCloud backup made before the update if you truly need the older setup.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erase All Content and Settings deletes data on the phone. Only continue if you have a backup you trust.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the installed version

    Open Settings > General > About and note the iOS Version. Also open Settings > General > Software Update to see if another update is waiting.

    You should see: You know which iOS build is running now.

  2. Adjust display and keyboard settings first

    Try Settings > Display & Brightness and Settings > General > Keyboard to restore familiar text size, appearance, and keyboard options before doing any erase.

    You should see: Many visual annoyances improve without wiping the phone.

  3. Decide whether a backup restore is worth it

    If you need the pre-update state and have a backup from before the update, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, then during setup choose Restore from iCloud Backup and pick that older backup.

    You should see: The iPhone restores apps and settings from the chosen backup, or you stop before erase if no suitable backup exists.

  4. Stay on the new version if no old backup exists

    If you only have backups made after the update, keep the current iOS and continue customizing settings. Apple does not offer a simple “uninstall update” button.

    You should see: You avoid an erase that would not bring back the older system.

Extra tips

What to look for: Settings > General > About shows a newer iOS version than before; unfamiliar icons, keyboard layout, or Control Center after the update.

Before you change anything: Confirm the current iOS version under Settings > General > About. Check whether you have an iCloud or computer backup from before the update. Know that erase-and-restore deletes what is currently on the phone unless a backup is restored. Never share your Apple ID password with unexpected callers.
