What does a 'no line' message on a home phone box mean?

Answer

A 'no line' message usually means the voice adapter box has lost its connection to the phone provider's network, not that the phone itself is broken. A power cycle fixes many of these cases, but a hardware fault or outage sometimes needs a technician visit.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • If the box shows any smoke, burning smell, or damage, unplug it and do not use it until it has been inspected.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the power light on the box

Look at the front of the voice adapter box for a power or status light. Note whether it is off, solid, or blinking, since this affects the next step.

You should see: You know whether the box currently has power and a network connection.

  2. Power cycle the box

Unplug the box from the wall outlet, wait about 30 to 60 seconds, then plug it back in directly to a working outlet. Avoid a power strip if one is being used.

You should see: The status lights go through a startup sequence and settle into their normal pattern within a few minutes.

  3. Recheck the phone for a dial tone

Pick up a corded or cordless handset connected to that line and listen for a dial tone once the box finishes restarting.

You should see: A normal dial tone returns, or the display still shows an error.

  4. Contact the phone provider if the error remains

If the box still shows no line after restarting, contact the phone provider through their official number or app to report the exact error and ask about outages or a technician visit.

You should see: The provider confirms whether there is a known outage or schedules a repair.

Extra tips

What to look for: A 'no line' or similar message on the phone display, and the power or status light on the voice adapter box

Before you change anything: Confirm the exact wording shown on the phone or box display. Check whether other phones or lines in the home are also affected. Confirm you are contacting the official phone provider, not a number found in a text or popup. Never share your account password or verification codes with anyone.
