Why can’t a Samsung phone send or receive calls and texts?

Answer

This usually means the phone lost mobile network registration because of Airplane mode, a SIM/eSIM issue, or a carrier outage—not because the contacts app failed.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not share account passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers offering to restore service.

Follow these steps

  1. Turn off Airplane mode

Swipe down to Quick Settings and make sure Airplane mode is off. Toggle it on for 15 seconds and off again if needed.

You should see: Mobile signal bars or the carrier name reappear.

  2. Check SIM or eSIM status

Open Settings > About phone > Status information and confirm the SIM or eSIM is recognized with a mobile network listed.

You should see: The phone shows network status details instead of no SIM or disconnected.

  3. Restart the phone

Restart the Samsung phone and try a call and a text to another number.

You should see: Calls and texts go through, or the same network error remains.

  4. Reseat the SIM or contact the carrier

If the SIM is physical, power off and reseat it. If service is still missing, ask the carrier to refresh the line or check for a network outage.

You should see: Service returns after a network refresh, or the carrier identifies an account issue.

Extra tips

What to look for: Not connected to system, No service, or Not connected to a network while call and text attempts fail

Before you change anything: Check whether other phones on the same carrier have service. Confirm the account bill is current. Note whether Wi-Fi still works. Avoid unofficial signal booster apps.
