How do I locate a missing iPhone with Find My?

Answer

Sign in to iCloud.com/find or the Find My app on another Apple device with the Apple ID used on the missing iPhone, check the map location, then enable Lost Mode if the phone is not with you.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Erasing an iPhone can remove the ability to keep seeing its location after the erase completes.
  • Meet in a safe public place if arranging a return with a stranger who found the phone.

Follow these steps

  1. Open Find My on the web or another device

On another Apple device open the Find My app, or on a browser go to iCloud.com and open Find My, then sign in with the Apple ID used on the missing iPhone.

You should see: The missing iPhone appears in the device list.

  2. Check the map location first

Select the iPhone and review whether it shows a current location, last location, or offline status.

You should see: A location or last-seen status is available to guide next steps.

  3. Play a sound if it may be nearby

If the map suggests the phone is nearby, use Play Sound and listen for it.

You should see: The iPhone plays a sound, or it is confirmed not nearby.

  4. Turn on Lost Mode

If the iPhone is not with you, enable Lost Mode, set a phone number where you can be reached, and optionally add a message on the lock screen.

You should see: The iPhone is marked lost, locked with a message, and location tracking continues.

  5. Erase only as a last resort

If recovery is unlikely and sensitive data is a concern, use Erase This Device from Find My, understanding location tracking may stop after a successful erase.

You should see: The erase request is pending or completed.

Extra tips

What to look for: A map location, Online/Offline status, and options for Play Sound, Lost Mode, or Erase This Device

Before you change anything: Use the Apple ID that was signed into the missing iPhone. Prefer Lost Mode before Erase if there is still a chance to recover the phone. Do not share Apple ID passwords or codes with unexpected callers. Note the approximate time the iPhone went missing.
