How do I recover missing Notes on iPhone used for a mileage log?

Answer

In Notes, open Folders > Recently Deleted and restore anything still there. Then check Settings > Apps > Notes > Notes Accounts (or iCloud settings) and confirm Notes is enabled for iCloud and any Gmail/Yahoo accounts you used. Browse each account folder in Notes—mileage entries may be under a different account than On My iPhone.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Turning off Notes for iCloud can remove notes from the iPhone until turned back on—read the on-screen warning.
  • Do not give your Apple ID password to unofficial “recovery” websites.
  • Recently Deleted items are permanently removed after Apple’s retention period.

Follow these steps

  1. Check Recently Deleted

Open Notes, tap Folders (or the back arrow to folder list), open Recently Deleted, and restore any mileage notes still within the retention window.

You should see: Deleted notes return to their folder, or Recently Deleted is empty.

  2. Look in every Notes account folder

In the folder list, expand iCloud, On My iPhone, Gmail, and any other accounts. Search for a known mileage entry title across accounts.

You should see: You find the notes under a different account folder than you were viewing.

  3. Re-enable Notes sync

Go to Settings > Apps > Notes and review accounts, or Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All and ensure Notes is on. For Gmail/Yahoo, confirm Notes is enabled for that account.

You should see: Account folders reappear and sync finishes.

  4. Restore from a backup only if still missing

If notes remain gone and you have a computer/iCloud backup from before they vanished, restore using Apple’s official backup guidance—understanding a full device restore can revert newer data. Otherwise recreate critical mileage entries going forward and export important notes.

You should see: Notes are recovered from backup, or you have a plan to prevent further loss.

Extra tips

What to look for: Recently Deleted folder; On My iPhone vs iCloud vs Gmail folders; Notes toggle per account; empty search results for a known mileage title

Before you change anything: Do not turn Notes off for iCloud until you have checked all folders. Avoid signing out of iCloud without a backup. Search for a unique mileage phrase before creating duplicates. Do not install third-party “note recovery” apps that ask for full iCloud passwords.
