Why can’t my iPhone make calls, receive calls, or get texts after eSIM changes?

Answer

When voice and SMS both fail after eSIM work, reset the radio with Airplane Mode, check for a carrier settings update under Settings > General > About, then give the carrier your EID and IMEI so they can reprovision the line. Repeated identical steps without carrier provisioning rarely restore SMS codes.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Repeatedly deleting eSIMs without carrier approval can lock you out of service longer.
  • Anyone asking you to “verify” by reading SMS codes during this outage is likely a scammer.

Follow these steps

  1. Do one clean radio reset

Turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off. Restart the iPhone once. Wait for the carrier name to appear before testing a call and a text to yourself from another phone.

You should see: Either service returns, or failures remain consistent enough to escalate.

  2. Check for carrier settings update

Go to Settings > General > About and wait about 30 seconds. If a Carrier Settings Update appears, install it, then retest calls and SMS.

You should see: Carrier settings update installs or About shows the current carrier version with no prompt.

  3. Collect EID and IMEI for support

Still in Settings > General > About, scroll to EID and IMEI and photograph them. Contact your consumer cellular carrier through their official app/chat and ask them to reprovision voice/SMS on that eSIM.

You should see: The carrier accepts the identifiers and pushes a new provisioning state.

  4. Reinstall eSIM only with carrier guidance

If support provides a new QR or transfer flow, add the eSIM once, restart, and test SMS codes again. Avoid repeating unrelated troubleshooting loops that do not change provisioning.

You should see: Calls, texts, and verification codes start working on the reactivated line.

Extra tips

What to look for: No calls/texts; codes never arrive; carrier settings update popup; EID and IMEI under About; No Service or wrong carrier name.

Before you change anything: Stay on Wi‑Fi for support chat if cellular is dead. Write down EID and IMEI before calling the carrier. Stop deleting and re-adding eSIMs in a loop unless the carrier directs you. Never read out one-time passcodes to unexpected callers.
