Why did a Samsung TV lose all sound after turning on closed captions?

Answer

This usually comes from an audio output or accessibility setting that changed while captions were adjusted, or from a temporary TV/cable-box glitch—not permanent speaker failure. Check Sound output and Caption settings, then do a full power reset of the TV and cable box.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A full factory reset removes apps and personalized settings; use it only after sound-output and power-reset steps fail.

Follow these steps

  1. Check mute and sound output

Press Mute once to unmute. Open Settings → Sound and set Sound Output / Speaker List to TV Speaker (or the soundbar you actually use). Raise volume above zero.

You should see: Audio returns from the TV speakers or connected soundbar.

  2. Reset caption settings

Open Settings → Accessibility or Broadcasting / Expert Settings and turn Digital Closed Captions off, then on again if needed. Confirm the caption mode is not stuck on an unavailable service.

You should see: Caption options respond normally, and sound remains available with captions off.

  3. Power-reset TV and cable box

Turn the TV off, unplug the TV from the wall, and unplug the cable box. Wait 60 seconds. Plug the TV back in alone first, turn it on, then reconnect and power the cable box.

You should see: Picture and sound return together on the active input.

  4. Test another input

Switch to a built-in app or a different HDMI input. If sound works there but not on cable, focus on the cable-box audio settings next.

You should see: You can tell whether the silence is TV-wide or limited to one source.

Extra tips

What to look for: Settings under Sound (Speaker List / Sound Output) and Accessibility or Broadcast for captions, plus whether mute or volume is at zero.

Before you change anything: Note whether sound is missing for every input or only cable/streaming. Check if an optical, HDMI-ARC, or soundbar cable is connected. Avoid a factory reset until simpler sound and caption settings are checked. Write down any current Sound Output setting before changing it.
