Why do all iPhone calls fail for several hours?

Answer

When every iPhone call fails for hours, start with Airplane mode, a restart, and a carrier-status check. A temporary outage, bad cellular registration, or an inactive line is more likely than a broken Phone app.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Reset Network Settings erases saved Wi-Fi passwords.
  • Do not share your carrier account PIN with unexpected callers offering to restore service.

Follow these steps

  1. Toggle Airplane mode

Swipe to Control Center, turn Airplane Mode on, wait 15 seconds, turn it off, then try a call again.

You should see: Signal returns and a test call connects, or the failure remains.

  2. Restart the iPhone

Power the iPhone fully off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on, enter the passcode, and test calling after cellular service appears.

You should see: Calls succeed after the reboot, or still fail consistently.

  3. Confirm the line is active

Check the carrier account or status page for outages and confirm the number is active for voice. Also verify Cellular is turned on in Settings.

You should see: The line shows active service, or the carrier identifies an outage or suspension.

  4. Reset network settings if needed

If the account is healthy, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings, rejoin Wi-Fi, and test calls again.

You should see: Cellular registration recovers and calls complete.

Extra tips

What to look for: Call failures to many numbers, missing signal or No Service, Wi-Fi calling status, and whether texts or data still work.

Before you change anything: Note whether Wi-Fi, texts, or data still work. Try calling from another phone on the same account if available. Avoid random third-party signal apps. Do not erase the iPhone first.
