Why does my iPhone have data but cannot make calls after deleting an eSIM?

Answer

Data without voice usually means the remaining SIM needs a voice/network refresh. Toggle Airplane Mode, set Voice & Data to LTE or 5G Auto, confirm Caller ID settings load, then ask the carrier to enable voice on the physical SIM line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not remove the remaining physical SIM unless the carrier is ready to replace service immediately.
  • Ignore texts claiming your line will be shut off unless you pay via gift card.

Follow these steps

  1. Reset the radio

Turn Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds, then off. Restart the iPhone and wait for the carrier name over the physical SIM before testing a call.

You should see: Voice registers on the remaining SIM, or the failure stays clearly voice-only.

  2. Set Voice & Data mode

Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and choose LTE or 5G Auto (whichever appears). Turn Wi‑Fi Calling off temporarily and retest.

You should see: Outbound calls connect on cellular voice.

  3. Check Phone settings load

Open Settings > Phone and tap Show My Caller ID to ensure the menu loads normally. If Phone settings hang or error, note that for carrier support.

You should see: Phone settings respond, indicating the voice line is at least partially provisioned.

  4. Ask the carrier to enable voice on the SIM

Contact your carrier and explain that the eSIM was deleted, data works on the physical SIM, but voice does not. Ask them to refresh voice/SMS on that SIM/ICCID.

You should see: Carrier refreshes the line and test calls succeed.

Extra tips

What to look for: Cellular data works; calls fail; physical SIM present; Wi‑Fi Calling quirks; Voice & Data mode under Cellular Data Options.

Before you change anything: Note whether the physical SIM line is the number you intend to use. Avoid deleting the remaining SIM. Use official carrier support for line changes. Do not share account passcodes with unexpected callers.
