Why does my iPhone say “Calling…” but the call never connects?
Answer
When an iPhone stays on “Calling…” the radio often needs a quick reset: toggle Airplane Mode, restart, then turn off Wi‑Fi Calling and retest. If cellular data works but voice still fails, the carrier’s voice service on the line usually needs a refresh.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not remove the eSIM or SIM to “fix calling” unless your carrier walks you through re-download steps.
- Ignore popups or texts that ask for a one-time code to restore calling.
Follow these steps
Reset the cellular radio
Open Control Center, turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then turn it off. Wait for signal bars to return and try one call to a known number.
You should see: The call rings through, or it still sticks on “Calling…” after signal returns.
Restart the iPhone
Power the iPhone fully off and back on, unlock it, wait for the carrier name to appear, then place another test call.
You should see: Voice service re-registers and normal calling resumes, or the symptom remains consistent.
Temporarily disable Wi‑Fi Calling
Go to Settings > Cellular > Wi‑Fi Calling and turn Wi‑Fi Calling off. Retry a call on cellular. You can turn it back on later if cellular voice works.
You should see: Calls connect on cellular without hanging on “Calling…”.
Ask the carrier to refresh voice service
If data works but voice still fails, contact your carrier via their official app or support and ask them to refresh voice provisioning on the line. Provide the exact “Calling…” symptom.
You should see: Carrier updates the line and test calls complete normally.

Extra tips
What to look for: Status stuck on “Calling…”; whether FaceTime/Wi‑Fi calling is on; signal bars vs. data working; Emergency Only indicators.
Before you change anything: Confirm you can browse on cellular or Wi‑Fi separately. Note your carrier name in the status bar. Do not delete the eSIM unless carrier support instructs you. Avoid entering account codes for unexpected callers.
