Why won't a new Apple Pencil sync with an iPad Pro 12.9-inch?

Answer

Confirm you have the Pencil generation that matches your iPad Pro, remove thick cases that block the magnet or Lightning port, charge the Pencil, then pair from Bluetooth settings or by attaching it. Restart both devices if it still will not connect.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm Pencil compatibility

Check Apple’s Pencil compatibility list for your iPad Pro 12.9 model year. Use only a supported Pencil generation.

You should see: You know the Pencil model matches this iPad Pro.

  2. Remove the case and attach to charge

Take off covers that can block the magnetic side or Lightning/USB-C connector. Attach or plug in the Pencil until a charge or pairing prompt appears.

You should see: A pairing banner or battery indicator appears for the Pencil.

  3. Pair in Bluetooth settings

Open Settings > Bluetooth, forget any old Apple Pencil entries, then attach the Pencil again and tap Pair.

You should see: Apple Pencil shows as Connected.

  4. Restart and retest in Notes

Restart the iPad, reconnect the Pencil, and draw in the Notes app.

You should see: Strokes appear immediately with pressure or hover features working as supported.

Extra tips

What to look for: The new Apple Pencil does not show as connected on an iPad Pro 12.9-inch and drawing does not work.

Before you change anything: Check whether the Pencil is 1st or 2nd generation (or USB-C) and which iPad Pro year you have. Charge the Pencil for at least 15 minutes. Remove magnetic or bulky cases during pairing.
