What should I do if an account asks security questions I never set up?

Answer

Do not guess repeatedly — too many wrong answers can lock the account further. Look for a link such as 'Try another way' or 'I can't answer this', which usually offers email or text verification instead. If nothing else is offered, use the provider's account recovery form.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never give answers or codes to someone who contacts you claiming to help recover an account.

Follow these steps

  1. Stop guessing

Repeated wrong answers can trigger a longer lockout. Stop after one or two attempts.

You should see: The account is not locked further.

  2. Look for another verification route

Check for a link offering to verify another way and choose email or text instead.

You should see: A code is sent to a channel you control.

  3. Try answers as you would have typed them then

If you must answer, consider lowercase, no punctuation, or a short form — matching is often exact.

You should see: One variation is accepted, or you move on.

  4. Use the account recovery form

If no alternative appears, find the provider's account recovery page and supply what you can: registered email, approximate signup date, and any payment records.

You should see: Recovery is under review.

  5. Replace them once you are in

After regaining access, update the security questions and add a current phone and recovery email.

You should see: Future recovery does not depend on forgotten answers.

Extra tips

What to look for: Any smaller link beneath the question — 'Try another way', 'Verify another way', or 'Need help?'. That is the route past it.

Before you change anything: Make sure you can receive mail and texts on the addresses and numbers registered to the account.
