How do I finish registering a new phone when setup keeps failing?

Successful phone registration usually needs a stable internet connection, the correct SIM/eSIM details, and the carrier or Google/Apple account that owns the line. Restart the phone, confirm cellular signal or Wi-Fi, and complete activation only inside the official carrier or phone setup screens.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never give carrier account PINs or one-time codes to someone who calls or texts you unexpectedly about phone registration.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart and connect to Wi-Fi

    Restart the phone, connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network, and return to the setup or carrier activation screen. Avoid public captive-portal Wi-Fi if possible.

    You should see: The activation screens load and can reach the internet.

  2. Confirm SIM or eSIM status

    Open Settings → Network/Cellular and verify the SIM is detected or install the eSIM using the official carrier QR/app. Toggle Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds, then off.

    You should see: The SIM shows Connected, Activating, or a clear carrier name instead of an empty slot.

  3. Finish official account registration

    Sign in only through the phone’s setup assistant or the official carrier app/website to register IMEI/SIM to your line. Enter codes only on those screens.

    You should see: The carrier confirms the line is active on this phone.

  4. Retry after a clean setup pause

    If registration still fails, note the exact error, wait 15–30 minutes for carrier provisioning, then try once more. Contact the carrier with IMEI and SIM ICCID if the same error persists.

    You should see: Activation completes, or support identifies a provisioning block on the line.
