What should I do if an iPhone is left behind at a restaurant or shop?
Answer
Use Find My from another device or from iCloud in a browser to see where the phone is now. If it shows a location, mark it as Lost — that locks it, shows a message with a contact number on screen, and keeps tracking it. Do not go to the location alone if it has moved somewhere unfamiliar.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Do not go to an unfamiliar address to collect a phone yourself. Report the location instead.
- Messages claiming your lost phone has been found and asking you to sign in are a common phishing tactic. Only trust the official Find My app or iCloud in a browser.
- Erasing the phone remotely stops it reporting its location, so do that only once you have given up on recovery.
Follow these steps
Open Find My from another device
Use the Find My app on another Apple device, or sign in to iCloud in any web browser and open Find My.
You should see: A map appears listing your devices.
Check the phone's position
Select the missing iPhone. Note whether it shows a live location, or a last known position with a time.
You should see: You can tell whether it is still at the venue or has moved.
Play a sound if it may be nearby
If the map still places it at the restaurant, choose Play Sound and ask staff to listen — it may be in a drawer or under a seat.
You should see: The phone chimes even if it was left on silent.
Mark it as Lost
Turn on Lost Mode and add a phone number where you can be reached. This locks the screen and displays your message.
You should see: The phone is locked, keeps reporting its location, and shows how to reach you.
Report it if it has clearly moved
If the location is somewhere you do not recognise, contact the police with the details rather than going there yourself.
You should see: The report is on record and you have not put yourself at risk.

Extra tips
