How do I reset a forgotten PIN on a Samsung or Android tablet?
Answer
If you forgot the tablet PIN, try any Forgot option on the lock screen first. If that is unavailable, Google Find My Device or a factory reset through recovery mode can unlock it, but a factory reset usually erases local data.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- A factory reset erases apps, photos, and files stored only on the tablet.
- Do not share Google passwords or verification codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Follow these steps
Check for a Forgot option
On the lock screen, enter an incorrect PIN if needed, then look for Forgot PIN, Forgot pattern, or a similar option and follow any Google or previous-credential prompt.
You should see: You can unlock with a Google sign-in or a previously used credential without wiping the tablet.
Try Find My Device remotely
From another device or computer, open Google Find My Device, sign into the same Google account, select the tablet, and use Secure device or erase only if you intend to wipe it.
You should see: The tablet locks with a new recovery message or begins a remote erase if you choose that option.
Boot into recovery mode
Power the tablet off. Use the model-specific key combo (often Power + Volume Up or Power + Volume Down) to open the Android recovery menu.
You should see: A recovery menu appears with options such as Wipe data/factory reset.
Factory reset the tablet
Highlight Wipe data/factory reset, confirm with Power, then choose Reboot system now after the wipe completes.
You should see: The tablet restarts to initial setup and no longer asks for the old PIN.
Complete setup with your Google account
Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with the Google account that was previously on the tablet if Factory Reset Protection asks for it.
You should see: Setup finishes and you can create a new PIN.

Extra tips
What to look for: A Forgot option on the lock screen, Find My Device availability, and whether the tablet is online and signed into a Google account.
Before you change anything: Confirm you know the Google account email and password used on the tablet, because setup after a reset often requires them. Back up anything accessible before a wipe if the tablet can still be unlocked another way. Avoid random PIN guessing that can trigger longer lockouts. Never share account passwords with unexpected callers.
