What should I check if a Garmin Fenix 5 shows a blue triangle only while plugged in?
Answer
Check the charging connection, try the documented LIGHT-button restart, and see whether a computer detects the watch. If it still goes dead off the cable, contact Garmin for diagnosis. The triangle alone does not prove a failed battery.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Stop charging if the watch is swollen, damaged, or unusually hot. Do not open the casing or improvise a battery replacement.
- A factory reset can erase unsynced data. Discuss recovery with Garmin before resetting a watch that cannot stay powered.
Follow these steps
Check the charging connection
Inspect the cable and contacts. Follow the charging and cleaning sections in the Fenix 5 manual: clean and completely dry the contacts before connecting the USB charging cable. Try an undamaged compatible cable if available.
You should see: The connection is secure, or a damaged cable or contact is identified.
Confirm the restart method
Garmin’s restart procedure is to hold LIGHT until the watch turns off, then hold LIGHT to turn it on. If you already did this correctly, move on.
You should see: The watch reaches its normal screen or remains stuck.
Check computer detection
Connect by USB to a computer with Garmin Express installed and use Add Device. Note whether Express detects the watch. If it requests a software update while the watch cannot stay powered off the cable, ask Garmin support how to proceed before starting it.
You should see: Express recognizes the watch, or you have a clear detection failure to report.
Escalate continued power failure
If the watch still goes dead when unplugged, ask Garmin support to assess the watch and battery. Report the triangle, failed restart, and computer-detection result. Do not repeatedly reset it in the hope of fixing an unconfirmed battery fault.
You should see: Garmin can advise on service or the appropriate recovery procedure.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether the watch reaches its normal screen, is detected by a computer, and stays on after unplugging.
Before you change anything: Confirm Fenix 5 on the watch. Note which cable and power source were used. The estimate covers checks, not a full charging session or service.
