How do I fix a wrong elevation reading on a Garmin watch?

Answer

Garmin watches usually calibrate the barometric altimeter automatically from the GPS starting point. If the reading is wrong, open the Altimeter settings under Sensors & Accessories, choose Auto Cal., and calibrate manually only from an elevation you know is correct.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not rely on the watch altitude alone for navigation, climbing, or any decision where a wrong elevation could be dangerous. Check a map or another reference.

Follow these steps

  1. Open the altimeter settings

Hold MENU on the watch, then select Sensors & Accessories and then Altimeter. Garmin's Calibrating the Barometric Altimeter page uses this path for fenix 6 watches, and your model may label it differently.

You should see: The Altimeter screen opens and shows the calibration options.

  2. Switch to automatic calibration

Select Auto Cal. and choose the option under it that uses your GPS starting point. Garmin's manual says the watch uses automatic calibration at the GPS starting point by default, so this is the setting most watches should use.

You should see: The watch returns to the Altimeter screen with Auto Cal. selected, if your model shows the setting that way.

  3. Calibrate only if you know the true elevation

If the reading is still wrong and you know the correct elevation of your location, select Calibrate and choose Enter Manually, Use DEM, or Use GPS. Garmin's manual says some devices need a phone connection to use DEM.

You should see: The watch accepts the elevation and the altimeter screen shows the new value.

  4. Compare the reading at a known place

Go to a spot with a known elevation, such as a marked trail sign or a point on a map, and compare the watch reading. Wait until the reading settles before you judge it.

You should see: The reading is close to the known elevation, or you can see that it is still off.

  5. Check for a software update if it is still wrong

If the reading stays wrong, check whether the watch software is current through the Garmin Connect app or the watch's update option. The exact path varies by model.

You should see: You know whether an update is available, or the watch is already up to date.

Extra tips

What to look for: Elevation or altitude numbers that jump around or stay far from a known height, especially after you changed the altimeter to manual.

Before you change anything: Find your exact Garmin model, since menu names differ between models. Know the true elevation of your location, such as from a map or a marked sign, before you enter a manual value. Note the current altimeter setting before you change it, so you can switch back.
