How do I fix a bank card that will not add to Google Wallet on a Fitbit?

Answer

Card setup for contactless payments on a Fitbit usually depends on your country, your bank, the phone's screen passcode, and the device and app being up to date. Check those first, then add the card again from the Google Wallet option in the Google Health app.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Be cautious of anyone who offers to get a card working for a fee or asks you to install software or grant remote access to help.

Follow these steps

  1. Check that the device, phone, and app are up to date

Update the Fitbit device and keep the Google Health app up to date from your phone's app store. Google's help page refers to the Google Health app, version 4.27 or higher. If you recently updated the device, Google's page says to wait 24 hours before checking for the Google Wallet option.

You should see: The app is at a current version, the device has finished updating, and you have either waited the 24 hours or the Google Wallet option is already visible.

  2. Confirm the phone passcode and notifications are on

Google's page says the passcode protection must be enabled on your phone, and phone notifications must be on to finish setup. Turn these on in your phone's settings if they are off. The menu names vary by phone.

You should see: Your phone asks for a passcode when it locks and wakes, and notifications are turned on for the app.

  3. Open Google Wallet in the Google Health app

Open the Google Health app, tap Connections at the top left, tap your device, then tap Google Wallet. Follow the on-screen instructions to add a payment card. Google's guide is How do I set up contactless payments?.

You should see: The Google Wallet screen opens, and the prompts to add a payment card appear.

  4. Enter the card and complete any bank check

Enter the card details exactly as they appear on the card. If your bank asks for extra verification, complete it when prompted. On first contactless setup, you may be asked to create a 4-digit device PIN on the watch.

You should see: The card is accepted, or the bank shows a verification step that you complete directly with the bank.

  5. Check whether your bank and card type are supported

If the card is still rejected, check Google's list of participating banks and supported payment methods, which Google's contactless payments page links to. Gift cards do not work for contactless payments. If your bank is not listed, the card may not be addable to the Fitbit device.

You should see: You know whether your bank and card type are supported, or whether you need a different card for contactless payments.

  6. Ask your bank or Google support if setup still fails

Contact your bank using the number on the back of your card or on the bank's official website, and ask whether it allows the card to be added to Google Wallet. If the problem continues, contact Google or Fitbit support through their official help pages.

You should see: You have a clear answer from the bank or the support team about whether the card can be added.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the Google Wallet option appears in the app, whether setup stops at a bank verification step or shows an error, and whether your phone has a screen passcode turned on.

Before you change anything: Check Google's list to confirm Google Wallet is available in your country. Keep your phone nearby and make sure it has a screen passcode turned on. Confirm your bank is a participating bank before entering the card again. Do not share one-time bank codes with anyone who calls you.
