How do I connect a cable or satellite box to a Samsung TV?

Answer

Connect the box's HDMI Out port to an empty HDMI IN port on the TV with both devices powered off, then power both on. Samsung's guide says some TVs switch to the box automatically; if yours does not, press Source on the remote and choose the HDMI port you used.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Turn off the TV and the box before connecting or disconnecting cables, and do not force a plug into a port that does not fit.

Follow these steps

  1. Power off the TV and the box

Turn off the TV and the cable or satellite box before you connect any cables. Samsung's support page says to make the connection with both powered off.

You should see: Both the TV and the box are off, so nothing is switching inputs while you connect the cable.

  2. Connect one HDMI cable

Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the HDMI Out port on the back of the box, then connect the other end to any empty HDMI IN port on the TV. Samsung's support page on connecting a cable box or other devices gives the same steps. Write down the number printed next to the TV port you used.

You should see: The cable is firmly seated at both ends, and you have the HDMI port number written down.

  3. Power on and choose the input

Turn on the TV, then turn on the box. Some TVs detect the box over HDMI, switch to it, and rename the source after the box. If nothing changes, press Source on the TV remote and select the HDMI port you used.

You should see: The box's picture or menu appears on the TV, or the Source list shows the HDMI port you chose.

  4. Use the Connection Guide if steps differ

If your TV's menus do not match these steps, press Source on the remote and select Connection Guide. Samsung's support page says this shows instructions for connecting various devices. Use the names shown on your TV, since they vary by model.

You should see: The Connection Guide shows connection instructions for your TV model, or you learn the menu path to use instead.

  5. Test a few channels

Use the cable or satellite box's own remote to change channels, and check that the picture on the TV changes with it. Confirm the channel lineup and any on-screen prompts with your provider if channels are missing.

You should see: Channels change on the TV when you use the box remote, so the connection is working.

Extra tips

What to look for: The HDMI port number you used on the TV, the source name that appears on screen, and whether the Source menu or Connection Guide lists the box.

Before you change anything: Note which HDMI port on the TV you plan to use. Check whether the box has an HDMI Out port or only component outputs. Keep both remotes nearby so you can change the input. Do not share account details, PINs, or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you about the setup.
