Why does a landline play a fax tone to callers?
Answer
Unplug any fax machine, modem, or alarm dialer sharing the line, then test with a basic phone. If tones continue with nothing else connected, ask the phone provider to clear fax/data service on the number.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Unplugging an alarm phone jack may affect monitored security until reconnected.
- Do not share account PINs with unexpected callers offering to “fix the fax tone.”
Follow these steps
Unplug fax and data devices
Disconnect fax machines, all-in-one printers with fax, computer modems, and security system phone jacks from the landline. Leave only one basic corded phone connected.
You should see: Only a simple phone remains on the line.
Test with an inbound call
From a mobile phone, call the landline. Confirm whether it rings normally or still plays fax tones.
You should see: Either the line rings normally or fax tones continue with no other device attached.
Check for a hidden pickup device
If tones persist, walk through every jack in the home—including basement or alarm panels—and unplug anything still on that pair. Try a different phone cord and wall jack.
You should see: You find a device that was answering, or confirm the line is clear.
Ask the provider to clear fax service
If fax tones remain with nothing connected, contact the landline provider and ask them to remove fax/data configuration and test the line for voice.
You should see: The provider reprovisions the number for voice and callers hear a normal ring.

Extra tips
What to look for: Inbound callers report fax beeps or modem tones on a number that should be a regular voice landline.
Before you change anything: Unplug devices one at a time so you know which one answers. Note whether you still need fax service on that number. Have your phone provider account info ready.
