Why is there no picture or sound from a DVD player on an HDMI input?

Answer

Check the TV is actually showing the input the cable is plugged into — the labels on the back do not always match the numbering in the input menu. If the input is right, swap the HDMI cable and try a different port, since cables and individual ports fail more often than players do.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unplug both devices before connecting or disconnecting HDMI cables to avoid damaging the ports.

Follow these steps

  1. Select the right input

Press Source or Input on the TV remote and step through every HDMI option, pausing a few seconds on each.

You should see: The player's menu appears on one of them.

  2. Check the port label matches

Confirm the socket the cable is in is the one you are selecting. Printed labels and menu numbering do not always agree.

You should see: You are selecting the port the cable is actually in.

  3. Swap the cable

Try a different HDMI cable you know works. Cables fail internally with no visible damage.

You should see: A picture appears, or the cable is ruled out.

  4. Try another HDMI port

Move the cable to a different HDMI socket and select that input. Individual ports can fail while others work.

You should see: The player appears on the new input.

  5. Power cycle both devices

Unplug the TV and the player at the wall for a minute, then power the player on first and the TV second.

You should see: The handshake between them completes and the picture returns.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the TV shows 'No signal' on that input or nothing at all, and whether the player's own display lights up.

Before you change anything: Power both devices off at the wall before changing cables, and note which port you started from.
