Why won't an iPhone accept English during initial setup?

Answer

If the language list scrolls past English instead of selecting it, the touch screen is often misreading taps or the setup screen needs a restart. Force-restart the iPhone, then try selecting English again with a firm, centered tap. If the list still will not stick, connect to a computer and use Finder or Apple Devices / iTunes recovery mode recovery only after confirming the display is responding elsewhere.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Restoring with a computer erases the device. On a brand-new iPhone that is usually fine, but do not restore if important local data was already created.
  • Do not share Apple ID passwords or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly during setup.

Follow these steps

  1. Retry the language tap carefully

On the language list, tap English once near the center of the row and hold briefly, then release. Avoid rapid scrolling while selecting.

You should see: English stays highlighted and the setup continues to the country or region screen.

  2. Force-restart the iPhone

Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. When setup returns, try selecting English again.

You should see: The phone reboots to the Hello or language screen and English can be selected normally.

  3. Test basic touch response

Try scrolling the language list slowly and tapping a nearby language once, then go back and tap English again. If nothing registers reliably, note that the touch screen may be faulty.

You should see: You can tell whether taps register inconsistently or only English fails.

  4. Use Apple recovery if setup remains stuck

If language selection still fails after a restart, connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC, open Finder (or Apple Devices / iTunes on Windows), and follow Apple’s official recovery-mode restore instructions for that model.

You should see: The computer detects the iPhone in recovery mode, or Apple’s support path clearly indicates next service steps.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the language row highlights briefly then scrolls away, any on-screen prompts after tapping English, and whether other on-screen buttons respond normally.

Before you change anything: Confirm this is initial Hello/setup language selection, not Language & Region after setup. Note the exact iPhone model shown on the box or Settings later. Avoid repeatedly force-restarting if the phone is extremely hot. Do not share Apple ID passwords or codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
