How do I fix landline phones that stopped working after a new modem install?
Answer
Plug the main cordless phone base into the modem’s TEL1 or PHONE1 port with a standard phone cord, wait several minutes for voice registration, then test dial tone. Confirm voice service is active on the account if the port stays silent.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- During outages, cable-voice phones may not work without modem power—keep a charged mobile for emergencies.
Follow these steps
Connect the phone base to TEL1
Plug the main cordless phone base into TEL 1 or PHONE 1 on the new modem using a standard phone cord—not an Ethernet cable.
You should see: The handset base has physical connectivity to the modem voice port.
Wait for voice registration
Leave the modem powered on for 2–5 minutes and watch for voice/phone status lights to become steady per the modem guide.
You should see: Voice lights indicate ready, or remain off if service is inactive.
Test dial tone
Place a handset on the base, wait for it to link, then lift the handset and listen for dial tone. Try an outbound call to a mobile.
You should see: You hear dial tone and can complete a call.
Confirm voice service with the provider
If there is still no dial tone, sign in to the provider account or contact official support and ask them to confirm home phone is provisioned on the new modem’s serial/MAC.
You should see: Support activates voice on the new modem or explains a plan limitation.
