How do I turn off call forwarding when the deactivation code does not work?
Answer
Check the forwarding setting on the phone itself first, since a busy-sounding tone does not always mean the change failed. If forwarding is still on and the code does not work, use your carrier's official support route to turn it off. Do not rely on a link or phone number that came in an unexpected email.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- An email or call saying a problem was fixed can be a scam. Use only the carrier's official website, app, or support number, and do not follow instructions from the message itself.
Follow these steps
Check whether forwarding is still on
On an iPhone, open Settings, then Apps, then Phone, then Call Forwarding, as described in Apple's Personal Safety User Guide. On other phones, look in the Phone app's settings for a Call forwarding option, since the menu name varies by phone and carrier.
You should see: You can see whether forwarding is on. On the iPhone, a green slider means forwarding is on, and the screen shows the number calls are going to.
Turn forwarding off from the phone first
If forwarding is on, switch the Call Forwarding control off on the same screen. Apple's guide notes that turning it off does not notify the number that was receiving the forwarded calls.
You should see: The slider is no longer green, and no forwarding number is shown. If the option is missing, the guide says to contact your carrier.
Use a dial code only if it matches your carrier
Verizon's FAQ on call forwarding says to dial *73 from the mobile phone to turn forwarding off, and that the confirmation may sound like a busy signal. Codes differ between carriers, so confirm the code on your own carrier's official support page before dialing anything else.
You should see: You hear a confirmation tone or message, which may sound like a busy signal. Then recheck the setting in step 1.
Test the change with a call
Wait briefly, open the forwarding setting again, and then call your number from a different phone. Let it ring a few times and see which phone rings.
You should see: Your phone rings and the forwarding setting still shows off. If the call still goes elsewhere, the carrier needs to change it.
Ask the carrier to turn it off if the code fails
If the code does not work, Verizon's FAQ says to contact Customer Service, because forwarding cannot be managed without the mobile phone. For other carriers, use the support number or account app listed on the carrier's official website or your bill, and ask them to check and turn off forwarding on your line.
You should see: The carrier confirms the forwarding status on your line and either turns it off or explains what it found.
Check the email before acting on it
If you did not ask for the change and the email did not come from your carrier's official site or app, treat it as a possible phishing message. Do not click links in it, call numbers listed in it, or install anything it suggests. Confirm the status through your carrier's own account page.
You should see: You know whether the email was a real carrier message, and you have confirmed the forwarding status through a source you chose yourself.

Extra tips
What to look for: Whether calls to your number ring on another phone, whether the forwarding setting shows a forwarding number, and whether the busy tone or 'cannot be completed' message appears only when you dial a code.
Before you change anything: Write down the number your calls are being forwarded to, if the phone shows it. Keep the email, but do not click its links or call numbers printed in it. Find your carrier's support number on its official website or on your bill. Do not share one-time codes, PINs, or account passwords with anyone who contacts you.
