How do I clear a voicemail message indicator on a Panasonic cordless phone?

Answer

Check your carrier voicemail first, then clear the indicator on the handset by holding the # key until it beeps. If the word Voicemail stays on the screen, turn off Voicemail tone detection in the handset menu.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the carrier voicemail first

Dial your carrier's voicemail number. Panasonic's support page says this is usually your own phone number. Listen to all new messages and follow the voice prompts. Do not give your PIN to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

You should see: You hear the voicemail menu or learn that no new messages are waiting.

  2. Clear the indicator on the handset

Hold the # key on the handset until it beeps. If that does not work, try holding the Clear key or the OFF key until it beeps. Panasonic's voicemail indicator troubleshooting page lists these buttons and notes that the process varies by model.

You should see: The handset beeps and the voicemail indicator goes away.

  3. Check your model's manual

If none of those buttons clears the indicator, look in the operating manual for your exact handset model for its voicemail indicator procedure. The steps differ between models.

You should see: You find the button sequence for your model, or you confirm that it clears the indicator another way.

  4. Turn off Voicemail tone detection

If the word Voicemail stays on the screen, press MENU, then 3, 3, 2. Use the up or down arrow to select the setting that turns off Voicemail tone detection, then press SAVE.

You should see: The setting is saved and the handset returns to its normal screen.

  5. Watch whether the indicator returns

If the indicator comes back, the carrier may still be sending a voicemail signal. Contact your carrier, describe the indicator and the handset, and ask them to confirm that no voicemail is waiting on your line.

You should see: You know whether the carrier side needs attention or the handset setting is the only cause.

Extra tips

What to look for: A Voicemail message, Voicemail msg via phone company, or a voicemail icon that stays on the handset display after you have checked the mailbox.

Before you change anything: Check your carrier voicemail first so you do not clear the indicator while real messages are waiting. Have your handset's operating manual nearby, since button steps differ by model. Never share your voicemail PIN or account codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
