How do I add my own Google account to a new Android phone?

Answer

Usually you can add your own Google account from the phone's Settings, under Passwords & accounts, then Add account, then Google. If the phone shows an account that is not yours, do not try to remove it with a third-party tool. Ask the account's owner to remove it, or use Google's official account recovery.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Removing an account deletes its email, contacts, and settings from the phone. Check that you no longer need that data before removing an account.
  • Be cautious with third-party apps, websites, or paid services that offer to remove a Google account from a phone. Use only Google's own sign-in and account recovery pages.

Follow these steps

  1. Check which account the phone is showing

Note the Google email address on the screen. If it is an account you own, you can usually add it or sign in with it directly. If it belongs to someone else, skip to the step about accounts that are not yours.

You should see: You know whether the account on the screen is yours or belongs to a previous owner.

  2. Look for an add-account option during setup

On the setup screens, look for an option such as Add account, Sign in, or Use a different account. The wording and placement vary by phone maker and Android version. If you cannot find one, it is usually easier to finish setup and add the account afterward.

You should see: Either a Google sign-in screen appears, or you have finished setup and can move on to the Settings step.

  3. Add your Google account in Settings

Open Settings, tap Passwords & accounts, then under Accounts tap Add account and choose Google. Follow Google's Add or remove an account on Android guide for the sign-in steps. If Passwords & accounts is not on your phone, look for Users & accounts, Passwords, passkeys & autofill, or Manage accounts.

You should see: A Google sign-in screen opens. After you enter your own account email and password, the account appears in the list of accounts on the phone. The phone may ask for your screen lock.

  4. Remove an account you no longer use

Only remove an account you are sure you do not need. In the same accounts menu, tap the account, then tap Remove account and confirm. Removing an account also deletes its email, contacts, and settings from the phone.

You should see: The account is no longer in the accounts list, and its data is no longer on the phone. Your own account remains in the list.

  5. Handle an account that belongs to someone else

If the phone is still tied to a previous owner's Google account, you cannot fix this by guessing or by using a tool that claims to remove it. The account owner can usually remove the device from their own Google account. If the owner cannot help, use only Google's official account recovery pages, and confirm each step on the page yourself.

You should see: You know who needs to act, and you have a clear official route to follow. The phone does not get past the account lock by unofficial means.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the Google email on the screen belongs to you, whether setup offers an option to add or sign in with another account, and whether Settings has a Passwords & accounts or similar menu.

Before you change anything: Write down the Google email address the phone is showing, so you know which account it is. Have your own Google account email and password ready, or make sure you can reach your own account recovery options. If the phone was not new to you, check with the previous owner whether their account is still signed in. Do not share passwords or verification codes with anyone who contacts you about the phone.
