What does it mean when the phone light on a modem is off?

Answer

An unlit phone light means the modem has not registered the phone service, even when internet is working — they are provisioned separately. Restart the modem first, check the handset is in the correct telephone port, and if it stays off, the provider needs to re-provision the line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Phone service over a modem stops working in a power cut. Keep a mobile available for emergency calls.
  • A factory reset of the modem clears your Wi-Fi name and password along with everything else.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the modem

Unplug it at the mains for a full minute, plug it back in, and wait several minutes for all lights to settle.

You should see: The phone light comes on, or stays off consistently.

  2. Check the port

Move the phone cable to the first telephone port if it is in the second. Service is usually only provisioned on port one.

You should see: The light comes on and a dial tone returns.

  3. Try a different handset and cable

Swap in a phone and cable you know work, to rule out the handset.

You should see: You know whether the phone is at fault.

  4. Check the account

Sign in to your provider account and confirm the phone service shows as active rather than pending or ceased.

You should see: You know whether it is provisioned.

  5. Ask the provider to re-provision

Report that the phone light is off while broadband works, and ask them to re-provision the phone service.

You should see: They reset the service and the light returns.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the modem has two telephone ports — service is usually provisioned on the first one only, and using the second gives exactly this symptom.

Before you change anything: Note which port the phone cable is in before moving it, and leave the modem powered for a few minutes after a restart before judging.
