Why are some TV channels missing and sound dropping out on one station?

Answer

Missing channels plus dropout on one station usually point to a weak antenna or shared building feed, not a broken TV. Rescan channels and check the signal path before replacing equipment.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not climb on roofs or touch outdoor amplifiers unless you are qualified and it is safe.
  • Ignore unexpected offers to unlock channels for a fee; use your landlord or official provider.

Follow these steps

  1. Rescan for channels

On the TV, open Settings > Channel or Broadcasting and run Auto Program / Auto Tune for Antenna or Cable, matching how the TV is connected.

You should see: The channel list refreshes and previously missing stations may reappear.

  2. Check the coax connection

Confirm the coaxial cable is finger-tight at the TV and at the wall plate. Reseat it and try again.

You should see: A loose connector is fixed, or the connection is confirmed solid.

  3. Compare signal on the problem channel

Tune to the channel that drops sound and watch for pixelation, then try a neighboring channel. Note whether only one station fails.

You should see: You confirm whether the issue is single-channel or wider.

  4. Test another TV on the same outlet if available

If another TV can use the same wall jack, check whether channel 10 also drops there.

You should see: You learn whether the fault is the TV or the building feed.

  5. Escalate to building or provider support

If multiple units share an antenna or amplifier and several homes see the same missing or weak channel, contact building management or the signal provider to inspect the amplifier or feed.

You should see: A technician inspects the shared signal path.

Extra tips

What to look for: Which channel numbers are missing, whether sound drops only on one station, and whether picture pixelates when audio fails

Before you change anything: Note which channels fail and whether other TVs in the building have the same issue. Avoid buying a new TV until you confirm the signal quality. Do not pay unexpected callers who claim they can “unlock” missing channels for a fee.
