Why can’t people hear me on an AT&T wireless home phone?

Answer

Power-cycle the AT&T wireless home phone base and any connected Clarity or cordless handset base, confirm the handset mic is not muted, and reseat phone cords in the TEL/PHONE ports. Persistent one-way audio after that often needs equipment replacement.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not share account PINs with unexpected callers claiming they need access to fix audio.

Follow these steps

  1. Check mute and try another handset

Confirm Mute is off on the handset. If you have a second handset, test a call on it.

You should see: You know whether one handset or the whole system is affected.

  2. Power-cycle both bases

Unplug power from the AT&T wireless home phone base and the Clarity/cordless base. Wait one full minute.

You should see: All base lights go dark.

  3. Bring the AT&T base back first

Plug the AT&T base in first and wait until it fully reconnects to the network, then power the cordless/Clarity base and wait for handset registration.

You should see: Handsets show ready status and network lights look normal.

  4. Recheck cords and place a test call

Reseat any phone cord between bases in TEL 1/PHONE ports if used, then call a mobile phone and verify two-way audio.

You should see: The other party can hear you clearly.

Extra tips

What to look for: Callers hear silence while you can hear them, mute icons on the handset, and base power/network lights.

Before you change anything: Note how long the problem has lasted. Have spare phone cords if available. Avoid opening sealed bases or modifying antennas.
