How do I check when a phone line is eligible for an upgrade?

Answer

Sign in to the carrier’s official account site or app, open each wireless line, and check Upgrade eligibility. A remaining device balance usually means the line is not eligible yet.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never share account passwords or one-time passcodes with unexpected callers offering “upgrade help.”
  • Ordering a phone before confirming eligibility can create unexpected installment charges.

Follow these steps

  1. Sign in to the official account

Open the carrier’s official app or website (for AT&T, myAT&T) and sign in with the account holder’s credentials.

You should see: You reach the account dashboard securely.

  2. Open wireless lines

Go to the wireless lines section and select the line you want to check.

You should see: Line details including device and plan information appear.

  3. Check upgrade eligibility

Look for Upgrade, Upgrade options, or Upgrade eligibility. Note whether it says eligible now or shows a future date.

You should see: You see clear eligibility status for that line.

  4. Review any remaining balance

If the line shows a device installment balance, read whether an early upgrade is offered and what payoff would be required.

You should see: You understand cost and timing before ordering a phone.

  5. Repeat for other lines if needed

Check each line separately, because eligibility is usually per line, not for the whole account.

You should see: You know which lines can upgrade now.

Extra tips

What to look for: Upgrade eligibility, early upgrade offers, and any remaining device balance on each line

Before you change anything: Use the official carrier website or app only. Have account sign-in details ready; do not share them with unexpected callers. Note which line you want to upgrade.
